Escher
Born in Hollanh in 1898, the son of a distinguished engineer, he already showed a talent for drawing at school. H wnet too the School for Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlen. He devoted himself to the graphic arts, particularly woodcuts.
Many of his littel known early works are landscapes and cityscapes of Italy, where he first visited in 1921 with hi parents. He met Jetta His future wife there in 1923. Escher and his wifw continued to live in Italy untill 1935. He travelled via Spain, there he he first saw the Alhambra Palace, famous for its intricate Moorish decorations. That efected on his work. In 1936 he visited the Alhambra for a second time. This time he copied some of its decorations, which fascinated him, and his art turned away from realism towards the ideas he used at his famous works.
Escher worked on constructing images made from geometric elements, dividing the surface into regular patterns The laws of the regular division of the plane and tiling pattrens effected for the rest of his life. He created first unrecognizeable 3D images on a flat surface.
